Hiiiiiii! I'm Ashlee, do-er, maker & creator behind all things Kuni Creative.
While just established in November of 2023, Kuni Creative has been an evolving (unnamed) idea for several years. Kuni Creative is the love child of over a decade's worth of serial-entrepreneurship, personal growth, perseverance, and life-long passion.
As a young girl, I envied the natural artistic skill that my mother and sister shared. They could paint and draw beautiful scenes and images, freehand. Even their handwriting was pretty, the kind you'd pay to have address your Christmas cards. And then there was me, the only thing I could draw free hand was a lop-sided stick figure.
I was raised by a single dad who worked maintenance for our local Metroparks, doing everything under the sun including carpentry, masonry & landscaping. He tinkered in the garage when he was home and did every home project and renovation himself. I wouldn't have called it art then, but those are the skills I inherited.
I learned to tinker too and it has served me well over the years, especially as a military spouse with a largely unavailable husband. Over the years, I've painted many a room, installed new lighting, renovated bathrooms, built custom shelving and even built our farmhouse table.
I love creating. When I first entertained the idea of a crafting business, I knew I wanted to work with wood. Earrings and ornaments are a far cry from the carpentry work my dad did and some of the home projects I've completed, but working with wood now, reminds me of days tinkering in the garage and hammering nails into old scraps of 2x4 and the sidewalls of a tree-fort my dad built for us.
Wood itself is a symbol of growth, warmth, generosity and new beginnings amongst different cultures. It is a life-giving power of the earth and when I look at it from that perspective, so then is every piece created from it... life giving.
My hope with Kuni Creative is to give life to the communities I live and serve in. With earrings, with friendship, with connection. Planting roots and growing new beginnings one piece at a time.
